How Do Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Work?

Smoke and Carbon monoxide detectors are perhaps some of the smallest but necessary devices in homes. They do generate fore alarms and warnings to protect you, and your entire household and valuables from fire accidents. If you want a reliable, compact and affordable smoke detector for your home or office, please contact Quality Electricians.

How do Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Work?

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors are available in three different versions; The Metal Oxide Semi-conductor, Biomimetic, and Electro-Chemical. The Biomimetic detectors work through a small chamber that is filled with a gel that mimics the effect of Carbon Monoxide in the human blood. When particles of the gel are in contact with Carbon monoxide from smoke, it changes color and this is detected by the electronic sensor in-built in the device, to trigger an alarm.

The Metal Oxide Semi-Conductor comes with a little Silica chip that interacts with carbon monoxide in the atmosphere and that causes a drop in current flow through the silica chip. It works just the way Ionization detectors work and when the voltage drops, an alarm will be sounded.

The electro-chemical smoke detectors are the most sensitive smoke detectors around. They do have electrodes that are connected to chemical baths and there is a rapid transfer of ions among the electrodes when smoke is detected, this will result in the sounding of an alarm. Electro-chemical smoke detectors are more common in industrial applications.

Regardless of the type of Carbon Monoxide detector you choose, you can rely on Quality Electricians for a smooth and efficient installation and maintenance services.

Early warning signs of fire will give you and your family a sufficient time to plan your escape route and even notify the fire service providers about an imminent fire accident in your home or office. The smoke detector is perhaps the only way you can rescue your entire household and valuables from fire destruction.

Carbon monoxide is tasteless, odorless and colorless, these are the reasons why it is hard to detect by human senses and it could cause serious fatalities even before you realize its presence in the atmosphere. Due to the importance of smoke detectors, many building and safety codes do require that these devices must be installed. It is important to contact a certified electrician who understands your local building laws, before installing smoke detectors in your home or office.
